Following Aftercare Instructions Protects Your Results

After dental treatment, following your aftercare instructions carefully can help reduce discomfort, support healing, prevent complications, and protect the results of your treatment. Cool Smilez Family Dentistry & Orthodontics provides clear guidance after every procedure — and our team is always available to answer questions.

Aftercare by Procedure

After a Dental Cleaning

  • Your gums may feel tender or sensitive for 1–2 days — this is normal
  • Avoid very hot, cold, or spicy foods if you have sensitivity
  • Continue brushing twice daily and flossing once daily
  • If you had a deep cleaning, avoid hard or crunchy foods for 24–48 hours
  • Schedule your next cleaning in 6 months (or 3–4 months if recommended)

After a Filling

  • Avoid chewing on the treated side until numbness wears off completely
  • Some sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure is normal for a few days
  • Avoid very hard or sticky foods for 24 hours
  • If your bite feels uneven, call us — we can adjust it quickly

After a Crown or Bridge

  • Avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods for 24 hours after placement
  • Some sensitivity is normal for a few days
  • Brush and floss normally — use floss threaders or interdental brushes around bridges
  • If the crown feels loose or your bite feels off, contact us right away

After a Tooth Extraction

  • Bite gently on gauze for 30–45 minutes to control bleeding
  • Do not rinse, spit forcefully, or use a straw for 24 hours — this can dislodge the blood clot
  • Apply ice packs to the outside of your face (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) for the first 24 hours
  • Eat soft foods — yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies — for the first few days
  • Take pain medication as directed
  • After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water several times a day
  • Avoid smoking — it significantly increases the risk of dry socket
  • Call us if you experience severe pain after 3–4 days, which may indicate dry socket

Signs to call us after an extraction: Severe pain that worsens after 3 days, fever, swelling that increases after 48 hours, numbness that does not resolve, or heavy bleeding that does not stop with pressure.

After Braces Are Placed or Adjusted

  • Soreness for 2–5 days is normal — take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed
  • Eat soft foods while your teeth are sore — pasta, soup, yogurt, eggs
  • Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky, or chewy foods throughout treatment
  • Brush after every meal and floss daily using a floss threader or orthodontic flosser
  • Wear your elastics as directed — consistency is key to staying on schedule
  • If a wire is poking, use orthodontic wax for temporary relief and call us

After Clear Aligner Treatment

  • Wear your aligners 20–22 hours per day — remove only to eat, drink (except water), brush, and floss
  • Rinse aligners with cool water when removing — never use hot water (it warps the plastic)
  • Brush and floss before reinserting aligners
  • Move to the next set of aligners as directed
  • Wear your retainer as directed after completing treatment

After Teeth Whitening

  • Avoid dark-colored foods and drinks (coffee, tea, red wine, berries) for 48 hours
  • Some tooth sensitivity is normal for 24–48 hours — use sensitive toothpaste if needed
  • Do not smoke for at least 48 hours after whitening
  • Maintain results with good oral hygiene and touch-up treatments as recommended

After Dental Implant Placement

  • Bite gently on gauze to control initial bleeding
  • Apply ice packs to reduce swelling for the first 24–48 hours
  • Eat soft foods and avoid chewing near the implant site for several weeks
  • Do not smoke — smoking significantly impairs implant healing and success
  • Take antibiotics and pain medication as prescribed
  • Keep the area clean — gently brush around the implant site after 24 hours
  • Attend all follow-up appointments — osseointegration (bone bonding) takes several months

After Wearing a Night Guard

  • Rinse your night guard with cool water after each use
  • Clean it with a soft toothbrush and mild soap — avoid toothpaste (it can scratch the surface)
  • Store it in its case when not in use
  • Bring it to your dental appointments so we can check the fit
  • Replace it if it becomes cracked, warped, or no longer fits properly
