Scaling & Root Planing in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

Scaling & Root Planing in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

Scaling and root planing is the gold-standard non-surgical treatment for gum disease. Our gentle technique removes bacteria and smooths root surfaces to help your gums heal.

Scaling and root planing — often called a deep cleaning — is the most effective non-surgical treatment for gum disease. Unlike a regular cleaning that focuses on the tooth surface above the gumline, scaling and root planing removes plaque and tartar from deep below the gumline and smooths the root surfaces to prevent bacteria from reattaching. At Cool Smilez Family Dentistry, we perform this procedure with local anesthesia for your comfort.

What Happens During Scaling & Root Planing

The procedure is typically done in two appointments — one side of the mouth per visit. We numb the area with local anesthesia, then use specialized instruments to remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline (scaling) and smooth the root surfaces (root planing). The smooth root surface makes it harder for bacteria to reattach and easier for the gum tissue to reattach to the tooth.

What to Expect After the Procedure

  • Some soreness and sensitivity for 1-2 weeks — manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Gums may appear to recede slightly as swelling decreases — this is normal
  • Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods for a few days
  • Continue brushing and flossing gently
  • A follow-up appointment 4-6 weeks later to evaluate healing

Results You Can Expect

Most patients see significant improvement after scaling and root planing. Gum pockets become shallower, gums become firmer and less red, and bleeding decreases. The procedure stops the progression of gum disease and, combined with regular periodontal maintenance, helps you keep your teeth for life.

Insurance Coverage

Scaling and root planing is typically covered by dental insurance when periodontal disease is diagnosed. We accept Florida Medicaid and most major PPO dental insurance plans. We will verify your benefits before treatment.

Typically two appointments — one for each side of the mouth. Each appointment takes about 60-90 minutes.
Do I need scaling and root planing or just a regular cleaning?
If you have gum pockets deeper than 4mm, bone loss, or active gum disease, scaling and root planing is recommended. A regular cleaning is for patients with healthy gums.
