Common Orthodontic Emergencies

• Broken bracket: A bracket has come off the tooth — call us to schedule a repair
• Poking wire: The end of the archwire is poking your cheek or gum — we can trim or reposition it
• Loose band: A metal band around a molar has come loose — call us promptly
• Lost or broken aligner: Lost or cracked ClearCorrect aligner — call us for a replacement
• Lost retainer: Call us as soon as possible to prevent teeth from shifting
• Mouth sores from braces: We can apply orthodontic wax to reduce irritation

What to Do Before Your Appointment

Broken bracket: Leave it in place if possible; cover with orthodontic wax if it is irritating. Poking wire: Cover the end with orthodontic wax; do not cut the wire yourself. Lost aligner: Wear your previous aligner until we can provide a replacement. Mouth sores: Rinse with warm salt water; apply orthodontic wax to the irritating bracket or wire.

When to Go to the Emergency Room

Orthodontic issues rarely require an emergency room visit. Go to the ER if you have a dental injury with significant bleeding, a broken tooth with exposed nerve, or signs of infection (swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing).
