Orthodontics for Children in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

Orthodontics for Children in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Early detection can prevent more complex — and more expensive — problems later.

Early orthodontic evaluation does not always mean early treatment. But it does allow us to identify developing problems and intervene at the optimal time. At Cool Smilez Family Dentistry, we offer orthodontic evaluations for children starting at age 7 at our Hialeah and Miami Gardens offices. Florida Medicaid is accepted for qualifying patients under 21.

Why Age 7 for the First Orthodontic Evaluation?

By age 7, children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth. This allows an orthodontist to evaluate the bite, jaw development, and tooth eruption patterns. Most children will not need treatment at age 7 — but early evaluation allows us to monitor development and intervene at the right time if needed.

Phase 1 (Early) Orthodontic Treatment

Some children benefit from Phase 1 treatment between ages 7-10. This early intervention addresses problems that are easier to correct while the jaw is still growing — such as crossbites, severe crowding, protruding front teeth, and jaw discrepancies. Phase 1 treatment may reduce the need for extractions or jaw surgery later.

Phase 2 Orthodontic Treatment

Phase 2 is comprehensive orthodontic treatment — typically braces or clear aligners — that begins after most permanent teeth have erupted (usually ages 11-14). Phase 2 aligns all the permanent teeth and corrects the bite. If Phase 1 treatment was completed, Phase 2 is often shorter.
