Simple vs. Surgical Extraction

A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible above the gumline. We loosen the tooth with an instrument called an elevator and remove it with forceps. A surgical extraction is needed for teeth that are broken off at the gumline or impacted. We make a small incision in the gum to access the tooth.

After Your Extraction

We will give you detailed aftercare instructions. Key points: bite on gauze for 30-45 minutes, avoid smoking and straws for 48 hours (to prevent dry socket), eat soft foods for a few days, and take any prescribed medications as directed. Most patients recover fully within 1-2 weeks.

Tooth Replacement Options

After an extraction, we recommend replacing the missing tooth to prevent neighboring teeth from shifting. Options include dental implants, bridges, and partial dentures. We will discuss the best option for you at your appointment.
