Oral Appliance Therapy for Sleep Apnea
Oral Appliance Therapy for Sleep Apnea
A custom oral appliance is a comfortable, effective CPAP alternative for mild to moderate sleep apnea. Cool Smilez fits and adjusts oral appliances at both offices.
Oral appliance therapy uses a custom-fitted dental device worn during sleep to treat obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. The appliance gently repositions the lower jaw and tongue to keep the airway open. At Cool Smilez Family Dentistry, we provide custom oral appliances at our Hialeah and Miami Gardens offices.
Types of Oral Appliances
Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD): The most common type — holds the lower jaw slightly forward to prevent airway collapse. Tongue Retaining Device (TRD): Holds the tongue in a forward position. We will recommend the best type based on your anatomy, sleep study results, and personal preference.
The Oral Appliance Process
- Consultation: Review your sleep study results and symptoms
- Impressions: Precise digital or physical impressions of your teeth
- Fabrication: Custom appliance made in a dental laboratory (2-3 weeks)
- Fitting: Careful adjustment for comfort and effectiveness
- Follow-up: Monitor progress and fine-tune the fit
- Annual check: Evaluate appliance condition and effectiveness
Oral Appliance vs. CPAP
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is the gold standard for severe sleep apnea. However, many patients find CPAP uncomfortable or difficult to use consistently. Oral appliances are an excellent alternative for mild to moderate OSA — they are comfortable, quiet, portable, and do not require electricity or a mask.
Insurance Coverage
Oral appliance therapy for diagnosed sleep apnea is typically covered by medical insurance (not dental insurance). We will help you verify your coverage and submit claims. Call 786-600-0494 to discuss your specific insurance situation.
