Signs of a Dental Abscess

• Severe, persistent, throbbing toothache
• Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
• Sensitivity to the pressure of chewing or biting
• Fever
• Swelling in your face, cheek, or neck
• Tender, swollen lymph nodes under your jaw or in your neck
• Sudden rush of foul-smelling, foul-tasting fluid in your mouth (if the abscess ruptures)
• Difficulty breathing or swallowing (go to the ER immediately)

How We Treat a Dental Abscess

Treatment depends on the severity of the infection. Options include draining the abscess, a root canal to remove the infected pulp, or extraction if the tooth cannot be saved. We will also prescribe antibiotics to clear the infection. We will numb the area thoroughly before any procedure so you are comfortable throughout.

Why You Should Not Wait

A dental abscess will not go away on its own. Without treatment, the infection can spread to your jaw, neck, and head — a potentially life-threatening condition called Ludwig angina. If you have swelling spreading to your neck or difficulty breathing, go to the emergency room immediately.
