Root Canal Retreatment in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

Root Canal Retreatment in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

A previously root canal-treated tooth that becomes painful or infected again may need retreatment. Cool Smilez provides root canal retreatment at both our Hialeah and Miami Gardens offices.

Root canal treatment has a high success rate, but occasionally a treated tooth can become re-infected or fail to heal properly. This can happen months or even years after the original treatment. Root canal retreatment involves reopening the tooth, removing the previous filling material, cleaning and reshaping the canals, and resealing the tooth. At Cool Smilez Family Dentistry, we perform root canal retreatment at our Hialeah and Miami Gardens offices.

Why Does a Root Canal Fail?

  • Missed canals that were not treated during the original procedure
  • Curved or narrow canals that were difficult to clean completely
  • Delayed crown placement after root canal, allowing recontamination
  • New decay reaching the root canal filling
  • Cracked tooth allowing bacteria to re-enter
  • Breakdown of the sealing material over time

Signs a Root Canal Has Failed

Pain or sensitivity in a previously treated tooth, swelling or tenderness near the tooth, a pimple or abscess on the gum, or a dark shadow at the root tip on X-ray (periapical lesion) are all signs that a previously treated tooth may need retreatment.

The Retreatment Procedure

The crown or restoration is removed to access the tooth. The previous root canal filling material (gutta-percha) is removed. The canals are thoroughly cleaned, reshaped, and disinfected. The canals are refilled and sealed. A new crown is typically placed after retreatment.

Retreatment vs. Extraction

Retreatment is almost always preferable to extraction when the tooth can be saved. Saving your natural tooth preserves bone, maintains proper bite function, and avoids the cost and complexity of tooth replacement. We will evaluate your tooth and give you an honest assessment of whether retreatment is likely to succeed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my root canal has failed?
Pain, swelling, or a pimple on the gum near a previously treated tooth are warning signs. An X-ray can confirm whether retreatment is needed.
Is retreatment more difficult than the original root canal?
It can be more complex, as the previous filling material must be removed. However, with modern techniques and microscope assistance, retreatment is highly successful.
Is retreatment covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by plan and time since original treatment. We will verify your benefits before treatment.
What if retreatment is not possible?
If retreatment is not feasible, other options include apicoectomy (surgical root canal) or extraction followed by implant or bridge.
