Antibiotic Therapy for Gum Disease in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

Antibiotic Therapy for Gum Disease in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

Antibiotic therapy targets the bacteria that cause gum disease, enhancing the results of scaling and root planing and helping your gums heal faster.

Gum disease is caused by bacteria. While scaling and root planing physically removes bacteria and infected tissue, antibiotic therapy targets the bacteria that remain after mechanical treatment. At Cool Smilez Family Dentistry, we use antibiotic therapy as part of a comprehensive periodontal treatment plan at our Hialeah and Miami Gardens offices.

Types of Antibiotic Therapy We Use

  • Arestin (minocycline microspheres) — placed directly into gum pockets after scaling and root planing; releases antibiotic over 21 days
  • Atridox (doxycycline gel) — applied directly into gum pockets; biodegradable
  • Systemic antibiotics (oral) — prescribed for severe infections or aggressive periodontitis
  • Chlorhexidine rinse — prescription-strength antiseptic mouthwash for home use

When Is Antibiotic Therapy Recommended?

Antibiotic therapy is most commonly used as an adjunct to scaling and root planing for moderate to severe periodontitis. It may also be recommended for aggressive periodontitis, patients who do not respond adequately to mechanical treatment alone, or patients with systemic conditions that increase susceptibility to infection.

What to Expect

Local antibiotics (Arestin, Atridox) are placed at the time of scaling and root planing. There is no additional discomfort. You should avoid touching the treated areas with your tongue or fingers, avoid eating hard or crunchy foods for a few days, and avoid flossing the treated areas for 10 days. Systemic antibiotics are taken as prescribed — complete the full course.

Insurance Coverage

Coverage for antibiotic therapy varies by plan. We will verify your benefits before treatment and provide a cost estimate. We accept Florida Medicaid and most major PPO dental insurance plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Arestin the same as taking an antibiotic pill?
No. Arestin is placed directly into the gum pocket, delivering a high concentration of antibiotic exactly where it is needed without the systemic side effects of oral antibiotics.
How long does Arestin work?
Arestin releases minocycline over approximately 21 days, targeting bacteria during the critical healing period after scaling and root planing.
Can I eat normally after antibiotic therapy?
Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for a few days after local antibiotic placement. Normal eating can resume after that.
Does antibiotic therapy replace scaling and root planing?
No. Antibiotic therapy is an adjunct to mechanical treatment, not a replacement. The bacteria must first be physically disrupted by scaling and root planing.
