Dental Bone Grafting in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

Dental Bone Grafting in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

Bone grafting rebuilds the jawbone lost after tooth extraction or gum disease — creating a solid foundation for dental implants.

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone beneath it begins to resorb (shrink) within months. This bone loss can make dental implant placement impossible without first rebuilding the bone. Dental bone grafting is a procedure that adds bone material to the jaw to restore volume and density. At Cool Smilez Family Dentistry, we perform socket preservation grafts and ridge augmentation at our Hialeah and Miami Gardens offices.

Types of Bone Grafts

  • Socket preservation graft: Placed immediately after extraction to prevent bone loss — the most common type
  • Ridge augmentation: Rebuilds bone in an area where significant loss has already occurred
  • Sinus lift: Adds bone to the upper jaw below the sinus floor for upper implants
  • Block graft: Uses a block of bone for large defects

Bone Graft Materials

Autograft: Your own bone — gold standard but requires a second surgical site. Allograft: Donor bone from a bone bank — most commonly used. Xenograft: Bovine (cow) bone — widely used and well-accepted. Alloplast: Synthetic bone substitute. We use the most appropriate material for each case.

The Bone Grafting Procedure

After local anesthesia, the graft site is prepared and the bone graft material is placed. A membrane is often placed over the graft to protect it and guide bone regeneration. The gum is sutured closed. Healing takes 3-6 months before implant placement can proceed.

Socket Preservation at Time of Extraction

The best time to place a bone graft is immediately after tooth extraction. A socket preservation graft placed at the time of extraction prevents the bone loss that would otherwise occur, reducing the amount of grafting needed before implant placement and shortening the overall treatment timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a bone graft before a dental implant?
Not always. If you have adequate bone volume and density, an implant can be placed without grafting. We evaluate bone with a 3D cone beam CT scan.
How long does bone grafting take to heal?
Typically 3-6 months before the graft is mature enough for implant placement.
Is bone grafting painful?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Post-procedure discomfort is manageable with medication and typically resolves in a few days.
Is bone grafting covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by plan. We will verify your benefits before treatment. Call 786-600-0494 for more information.
