Simple vs. Surgical Extractions

A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible above the gum line. The tooth is loosened with an elevator and removed with forceps. A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is broken below the gum line, impacted, or has curved roots. A small incision is made in the gum to access the tooth. Both procedures are performed under local anesthesia.

After Your Extraction

Bite on gauze for 30-45 minutes to control bleeding. Avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, or spitting forcefully for 72 hours — these can dislodge the blood clot and cause dry socket. Eat soft foods for the first few days. Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed. Call us if you experience severe pain after 3-4 days, which may indicate dry socket.
