Surgical Tooth Extractions in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

Surgical Tooth Extractions in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

When a tooth is broken below the gum line, impacted, or has complex roots, a surgical extraction is needed. Cool Smilez performs surgical extractions with precision and care.

A surgical extraction is a more involved procedure than a simple extraction, required when a tooth cannot be easily accessed or removed in one piece. This includes teeth broken at the gum line, impacted teeth, teeth with curved or fused roots, and teeth that have fractured during an attempted simple extraction. At Cool Smilez Family Dentistry, our experienced dentists perform surgical extractions at our Hialeah and Miami Gardens offices.

When Is a Surgical Extraction Needed?

  • Tooth broken at or below the gum line
  • Impacted wisdom teeth or other impacted teeth
  • Teeth with curved, long, or fused roots
  • Teeth that have fractured during extraction
  • Teeth with significant bone loss requiring bone removal
  • Retained root tips after a previous extraction

The Surgical Extraction Procedure

After thorough numbing with local anesthesia, a small incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone. Bone may be gently removed to access the tooth. The tooth is often sectioned (divided into pieces) for easier removal. The site is thoroughly cleaned, and the gum is sutured closed. Dissolvable sutures are typically used.

Sedation Options

For patients with dental anxiety or complex cases, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax during the procedure. This is safe, effective, and wears off quickly. Discuss sedation options with us when you schedule your appointment.

Recovery After Surgical Extraction

Swelling and discomfort are normal for 3-5 days. Apply ice packs for the first 24 hours (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off). Take prescribed medications as directed. Eat soft foods for 5-7 days. Avoid smoking, straws, and vigorous rinsing for 72 hours. Return for suture removal if non-dissolvable sutures were placed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a surgical extraction more painful than a simple extraction?
Not during the procedure — both are performed under local anesthesia. Post-procedure discomfort may be slightly more with a surgical extraction, but is manageable with medication.
How long does a surgical extraction take?
Typically 45-90 minutes depending on the complexity of the case.
Does Medicaid cover surgical extractions?
Yes. Florida Medicaid covers surgical extractions when medically necessary.
Will I need stitches after a surgical extraction?
Usually yes. We typically use dissolvable sutures that do not require removal.
