Tooth Extraction Aftercare Instructions

Tooth Extraction Aftercare Instructions

Following these aftercare instructions carefully will help you heal quickly, minimize discomfort, and avoid complications like dry socket after your tooth extraction.

Proper aftercare after a tooth extraction is essential for fast healing and preventing complications. At Cool Smilez Family Dentistry, we provide detailed aftercare instructions to every patient after an extraction. This page summarizes the key steps to follow. If you have any questions or concerns after your extraction, call us at 786-600-0494.

Immediately After Extraction (First 24 Hours)

  • Bite firmly on the gauze pad for 30-45 minutes to control bleeding
  • Replace gauze if bleeding continues — fold a new piece and bite firmly
  • Apply ice packs to the outside of your face for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off
  • Rest and avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day
  • Do NOT rinse, spit forcefully, or use a straw — this can dislodge the blood clot
  • Do NOT smoke or use tobacco products
  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed
  • Eat soft, cool foods — yogurt, applesauce, smoothies (no straw), mashed potatoes

Days 2-3

Swelling typically peaks at 48-72 hours. Continue ice packs if helpful. Begin gentle warm salt water rinses (1/2 teaspoon salt in 8 oz warm water) after 24 hours — rinse gently, do not spit forcefully. Continue soft foods. Brush teeth gently, avoiding the extraction site.

Days 4-7

Swelling should begin to subside. Continue salt water rinses 2-3 times daily. You can gradually return to a normal diet as comfort allows. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sharp foods near the extraction site. Most patients feel significantly better by day 5.

Warning Signs — Call Us Immediately

  • Fever above 101°F

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to heal after a tooth extraction?
The gum tissue closes in 1-2 weeks. Full bone healing takes 3-6 months, but most patients feel normal within a week.
What can I eat after a tooth extraction?
Soft foods for the first few days — yogurt, smoothies (no straw), mashed potatoes, soup, scrambled eggs. Avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods.
When can I smoke after a tooth extraction?
Wait at least 72 hours — longer is better. Smoking is the leading cause of dry socket.
When can I brush my teeth after an extraction?
Brush gently the same day, avoiding the extraction site. Resume normal brushing after 24 hours, still being gentle near the site.
