Palate Expanders in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

A palate expander widens the upper jaw to create space for permanent teeth — often eliminating the need for tooth extractions later.

A palate expander (also called a rapid palatal expander or RPE) is an orthodontic appliance that gradually widens the upper jaw. It is most effective in children and young teens whose jaw suture has not yet fused. By widening the jaw, we can create space for crowded permanent teeth, correct crossbites, and improve breathing. At Cool Smilez Family Dentistry, palate expanders are available at our Hialeah and Miami Gardens offices.

How a Palate Expander Works

The expander is cemented to the upper back teeth. A small key is used to turn a screw in the center of the expander — typically once or twice per day. Each turn widens the expander slightly, gradually separating the two halves of the upper jaw. After the desired expansion is achieved, the expander is left in place for several months to allow new bone to fill in the gap.

Who Needs a Palate Expander?

  • Children with a narrow upper jaw causing crowding
  • Children with a posterior crossbite (upper teeth bite inside lower teeth)
  • Children with impacted teeth that need space to erupt
  • Children with breathing issues related to a narrow airway
  • Most effective in children ages 7-14 before the jaw suture fuses

What to Expect

You may notice a gap between the front teeth as the jaw widens — this is normal and will close on its own after expansion is complete. Speech may be slightly affected initially. Some pressure or discomfort after turning is normal. Most expansion is completed in 3-6 months, followed by a retention period of 6-12 months.

Cost & Medicaid

Palate expanders are often covered by Florida Medicaid for qualifying patients under 21 when medically necessary. Most PPO dental insurance plans with orthodontic benefits also cover expanders. Call 786-600-0494 to schedule a consultation.
