Space Maintainers for Children in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

Space Maintainers for Children in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

When a baby tooth is lost too early, a space maintainer holds the space open for the permanent tooth — preventing crowding and the need for future orthodontic treatment.

Baby teeth serve as natural space holders for permanent teeth. When a baby tooth is lost prematurely — due to decay, injury, or extraction — the surrounding teeth can drift into the empty space, blocking the permanent tooth from erupting properly. A space maintainer is a simple appliance that holds the space open until the permanent tooth is ready to erupt. At Cool Smilez Family Dentistry, space maintainers are available for children at our Hialeah and Miami Gardens offices.

Types of Space Maintainers

  • Band and loop: A metal band on a molar with a wire loop holding the space — most common type
  • Distal shoe: Used when the first permanent molar has not yet erupted
  • Lingual arch: Holds space on both sides of the lower arch
  • Nance appliance: Holds space on both sides of the upper arch
  • Removable space maintainer: Similar to a retainer with an artificial tooth

When Is a Space Maintainer Needed?

A space maintainer is recommended when a baby tooth is lost before the permanent tooth is ready to erupt — typically more than 1 year before the expected eruption date. We will take an X-ray to evaluate the permanent tooth and determine whether a space maintainer is appropriate.

Caring for a Space Maintainer

Brush around the space maintainer carefully. Avoid sticky and chewy foods that can dislodge the appliance. Return for regular checkups so we can monitor the permanent tooth's progress and remove the maintainer when the permanent tooth is ready to erupt.

Medicaid Coverage

Florida Medicaid covers space maintainers for children when medically necessary. Call 786-600-0494 to schedule a consultation.
