Dental Sealants — Protect Teeth from Cavities

Dental Sealants — Protect Teeth from Cavities

Dental sealants create a protective barrier on the chewing surfaces of back teeth — one of the most effective ways to prevent cavities in children and adults.

The chewing surfaces of back teeth have deep grooves and pits that are difficult to clean with a toothbrush. Bacteria and food particles get trapped in these grooves, leading to cavities. Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings applied to these surfaces to seal out bacteria and prevent decay. They are quick, painless, and highly effective.

Who Should Get Dental Sealants

  • Children ages 6-14 when permanent molars come in
  • Adults with deep grooves in their back teeth
  • Patients with a history of frequent cavities
  • Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment

How Sealants Are Applied

The process takes just a few minutes per tooth. We clean and dry the tooth, apply a mild acid solution to roughen the surface for better bonding, rinse and dry again, then paint on the sealant and cure it with a special light. No drilling or anesthesia required.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

Sealants can last 5-10 years with proper care. We check them at every exam and can reapply if needed. They are a cost-effective investment — preventing a cavity is far less expensive than treating one.

Insurance Coverage

Most dental insurance plans cover sealants for children. Coverage for adults varies. We accept Florida Medicaid and most major PPO dental insurance plans.
