Inlay vs. Onlay vs. Crown

• Inlay — fits within the cusps of the tooth (like a puzzle piece inside the chewing surface)
• Onlay — covers one or more cusps of the tooth (larger than an inlay, smaller than a crown)
• Crown — covers the entire visible tooth (used when damage is extensive)
• Inlays and onlays preserve more natural tooth structure than a crown

The Inlay/Onlay Process

Getting an inlay or onlay takes two visits. At the first visit, we remove the damaged portion of the tooth, take impressions, and place a temporary restoration. The impressions are sent to a dental lab where your custom restoration is fabricated. At the second visit, we bond the permanent inlay or onlay to your tooth.

Inlays and onlays are extremely durable — they can last 20 years or more with proper care. They are made from tooth-colored ceramic that resists staining, and they bond directly to the tooth, strengthening it rather than just covering it.
