Impacted Teeth Treatment in Hialeah & Miami Gardens

An impacted tooth is one that cannot erupt properly due to lack of space or obstruction. Left untreated, impacted teeth can cause pain, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth.

A tooth becomes impacted when it cannot erupt into its normal position in the dental arch — typically because there is not enough space or because another tooth or bone is blocking its path. Wisdom teeth are the most commonly impacted teeth, but canines, premolars, and other teeth can also become impacted. At Cool Smilez Family Dentistry, we diagnose and treat impacted teeth at our Hialeah and Miami Gardens offices.

Commonly Impacted Teeth

  • Wisdom teeth (third molars): Most commonly impacted — often removed to prevent problems
  • Upper canines (cuspids): Second most commonly impacted — may be exposed and guided into position with orthodontics rather than removed
  • Lower premolars: Can become impacted in patients with crowded arches
  • Supernumerary teeth: Extra teeth that can block normal eruption

Problems Caused by Impacted Teeth

Pain and pressure in the jaw, infection of the gum tissue around the impacted tooth (pericoronitis), damage to adjacent teeth and their roots, cyst formation around the impacted tooth, crowding of other teeth, and difficulty cleaning leading to decay.

Treatment Options

Surgical removal: The most common treatment for impacted wisdom teeth and other impacted teeth that cannot be brought into proper position. Orthodontic exposure and eruption: For impacted canines, we may surgically expose the tooth and attach a bracket and chain to guide it into position with braces. Monitoring: Asymptomatic impacted teeth in older patients may be monitored rather than removed.

Diagnosis with 3D Imaging

We use digital X-rays and panoramic imaging to evaluate impacted teeth. For complex cases, cone beam CT (CBCT) imaging provides a three-dimensional view of the tooth's position relative to nerves, sinuses, and adjacent teeth — allowing for precise surgical planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all impacted teeth need to be removed?
Not necessarily. The decision depends on the type of tooth, its position, symptoms, and the patient's age. We evaluate each case individually.
Can an impacted tooth cause pain even if it has not erupted?
Yes. Pressure from an impacted tooth can cause significant pain even when the tooth is completely below the gum line.
What happens if an impacted tooth is left untreated?
Potential complications include infection, cyst formation, damage to adjacent teeth, and crowding. Not all impacted teeth cause problems, but monitoring is important.
Does Medicaid cover treatment for impacted teeth?
Florida Medicaid covers removal of impacted teeth when medically necessary.
