Common Dental Emergencies in Children

  • Knocked-out tooth (avulsed tooth) — time-critical, call immediately
  • Broken or chipped tooth
  • Toothache or dental abscess
  • Loose tooth from injury
  • Bitten lip, tongue, or cheek with significant bleeding
  • Object stuck between teeth
  • Broken braces or orthodontic appliance

What to Do If Your Child Knocks Out a Tooth

For a permanent tooth: Find the tooth, hold it by the crown (not the root), rinse gently with water if dirty, try to reinsert it in the socket, or keep it moist in milk or saliva. Call us immediately — time is critical. For a baby tooth: Do NOT try to reinsert it. Call us for guidance. Reimplanting a baby tooth can damage the permanent tooth underneath.

What to Do for a Toothache

Rinse with warm salt water. Check for food stuck between teeth and gently floss. Give age-appropriate over-the-counter pain reliever (ibuprofen or acetaminophen). Do NOT place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum. Call us to schedule a same-day appointment.

When to Go to the Emergency Room

Go to the ER if your child has: uncontrolled bleeding, signs of infection with swelling of the face or neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a head injury with the dental trauma. For all other dental emergencies, call Cool Smilez first at 786-600-0494.
