• Severe, persistent, throbbing toothache

• Fever
• Swelling in the face, cheek, or neck
• Tender, swollen lymph nodes under the jaw or in the neck
• A pimple-like bump on the gum near the affected tooth
• Foul-smelling or foul-tasting fluid if the abscess ruptures

When to Go to the Emergency Room

Go to the emergency room immediately if you have: swelling that has spread to the floor of the mouth, neck, or eye area, difficulty swallowing or breathing, high fever (above 103°F), or feeling very ill. These are signs that the infection has spread and is life-threatening.

Treatment for Dental Abscess

Root canal treatment: The most common treatment — removes the infected pulp and saves the tooth. Incision and drainage: The abscess is opened and drained to relieve pressure. Antibiotics: Used to control the spread of infection — do not cure the abscess alone. Extraction: If the tooth cannot be saved. We will determine the best treatment at your emergency appointment.

Can Antibiotics Cure a Dental Abscess?

No. Antibiotics can temporarily reduce symptoms and prevent the spread of infection, but they cannot eliminate the source of the infection. Root canal treatment or extraction is required to cure a dental abscess. Never rely on antibiotics alone for a dental abscess.
